Tips From Team Awesome: Surviving Digital Scrapbooking Day

Happy Digital Scrapbooking Day weekend everyone! Anyone who’s been around digi land for awhile knows that as much fun as these big scrapbooking holidays can be, they can also be a bit crazy and overwhelming!

I shared my my guide for surviving scrapbooking events in this National Scrapbooking Day post of yore so I thought it’d be fun to ask Team Awesome to share their top tips with you as well. Here’s what they had to say…

From Jen: PATIENCE is the key to surviving DSD. There are awesome sales and events going on, and you cannot do everything. At the beginning of the weekend, make a list of sales you want to check out and events you want to participate in, and work from there. Don’t buy anything immediately- make a list and come back after you look at all the sales to make sure you truly want everything and not just because it’s on sale. Most of all- HAVE FUN!

From Natalie: Play the games you really want to win. There are so many games all around the sites that you will become totally overwhelmed and frustrated if you try to play them all.

From Heather: It’s very easy to get overwhelmed. Lots of kits that you like but have not decided to purchase throughout the year all become possibilities to take home with you during a storewide sale. Try to purchase kits that you have already on your wishlist, kits that you can still remember off the top of your head even if it debuted months ago, kits that you have a solid idea or two on how you could use them with photos that you have, and of course any new items that your favorite designers have created for the occasion that jump out at you. This is also a great time to be a little adventurous and try out a kit from a new to you designer. Who knows? A kit purchase during this weekend could lead you to a new favorite place to shop. Breathe and pace yourself. Start with your absolute must have purchases first and work your way along. Your budget may tell you that you can’t have everything this November and the items on the bottom of your list may need to wait for later. And make some time to scrap! No point in getting all of the fun new items for our stashes if we don’t use them!

Just imagine you’re writing an email to your future self telling the details of your latest adventure.

What details do you want to remember? What little moments will make you smile or laugh 10, 20, or even 50 years from now?

Those are the details you want to include in your story.

Quirky wording, typos, haha’s, LOL’s and all.

Because that’s how you’d write an email to yourself, right? I know I totally include those in my journaling, haha.

The reality is if one day your family and friends read your story, those details are what’s going to make them LOVE that story that much more, because your personality is going to shine from the page.

They aren’t going to care whether you used proper grammar, double-spacing or pulled out your thesaurus to find the right word. They’re going to care that you took the time to capture a moment that mattered to you, quirkyness and all. And that’s the magic of telling your story.

Well, the Olympics are in full swing over in London but that’s not the only competition heating up this summer…

Over at Sweet Shoppe Designs today marks the start of our first ever Sweet Shoppe Summer Games…

…where during the next two weeks you’ll have a chance to show off your scrapbooking awesomeness in 6 different events with a chance to win up to $6000 in cash and prizes!

We have some pretty kick-ass challenges lined up for you including 4 individual events and 2 team events where you and a partner will work together to complete the challenge.

Even I got in on the scrapbooking action and whipped up this layout for the Boxing challenge which is one of two events starting today…

Why I Love Scrapbooking Competitions

I can’t even tell you how excited I am about this competition. Seriously, I’m practically ready to burst into a happy dance of excitement over here because that’s how much I love scrapbooking competitions…and I’m not even eligible to win!

But here’s why I love scrapbooking competitions:

Because when you push yourself outside your creative comfort zone, that is when you find your scrapbooking awesomeness.

In order to learn and grow and find your own style as a creative artist, you have to stop doing what everyone else is doing.

And competitions are a great way to do just that.

Because not only do they force you to think outside the box in a creative way but they also push you to stand out from everyone else.

And it is in those moments, when you challenge yourself to do your absolute best, that you start to discover and embrace what makes you awesome and unique as a scrapbooker.

Of course competing for scrapbooking fame, glory and awesome prizes doesn’t hurt. But for me, the biggest benefit of scrapbooking competitions has always been what I’ve learned about myself.

I have no doubt that every competition I’ve entered has directly impacted my style today. And I can tell you, that when I look back over all the layouts I’ve created since I started scrapbooking, some of my most favorite layouts are ones I’ve done for competitions.

Because they are the truest representation of not only my style but of my evolution and growth as a digital scrapbooker. And that is really cool.

So if you’re thinking of entering the Sweet Shoppe Summer Games, I highly encourage you join in the fun!

Even if you don’t get a shiny medal at the end, I guarantee you will come away with some awesome layouts and a more solid understand of yourself. And that’s a prize money can’t buy.
